Where the two actually differ
axes4 have been working on PDF/UA since before most of the market knew it existed, and it shows. If your work is German or English documents on Windows, and you want the deepest feature set available, axesPDF is the benchmark and this page is not going to argue otherwise.
Three things send people looking for something else.
Platform. There is no macOS build. For a designer or an accessibility consultant on a Mac, that means a Windows VM for one application — and a licence for Windows on top of the USD 650.
Right-to-left. axesPDF will render and tag Hebrew and Arabic. It will not tell you that the text in the file is stored backwards, because it assumes — as PDF/UA-1 does — that a producer stores logical order. Price against use. USD 650 a year is defensible for a full-time remediator. It is hard to justify for someone who remediates twenty documents a quarter, which describes most in-house web teams and law-firm knowledge managers.
What you give up by switching
Be clear about this. axesPDF’s table editor is better than Taggart’s. Its list handling has more affordances. It has a decade of accumulated handling for the specific ways specific producers get things wrong, and that kind of knowledge only comes from time.
If you remediate complex tables all day on Windows, axesPDF is the better tool and the price is not the point.

Is Taggart as thorough as axesPDF?
On the check engine, both implement the machine-checkable Matterhorn conditions and will largely agree. On editing depth axesPDF is ahead — its table and list tooling is the best in the category and has had a decade of refinement. Where Taggart is ahead is right-to-left, macOS, the appearance guarantee, and the remediation report.
Can I run axesPDF on a Mac?
Only through a Windows VM or Parallels. axes4 has not shipped a macOS build and has not announced one. If you work on a Mac, that is usually the deciding factor before price enters the conversation.
Does axesPDF handle Hebrew?
It renders Hebrew and lets you tag it, like any tagged-PDF editor. What it does not do is detect that the text is stored in visual order, which is the failure that makes most Hebrew PDFs unreadable to a screen reader. No mainstream tool does — that is the gap Taggart was built for.
What about axesWord?
